In the 33rd choosing of a winner for the Richard A. Whitfield award May 29, Cadet 2nd Class Amy Kemp was the second female to walk away with the plaque -- given annually to a company G-3 squad leader.

Cadet 2nd Class Amy Kemp accepts congratulations from Robert Whitfield after receiving the award dedicated to his son, Richard, who died in 1970 while attending the academy.

The award is presented each year by Whitfield’s parents -- who travel to West Point from Florida -- to honor their son, who died of complications after nearly defeating his cancer during his cow year in 1970, said Robert Whitfield, Richard’s father.

Chosen from recommendations of squad members and the chain of command for excellence in leadership, Kemp was responsible for counseling, training and discipline of 6 to 11 cadets.

"I was really nervous accepting this in front of the whole company, but I really couldn’t have done this without my squad," said Kemp, 20, who is as yet unsure what branch she will choose to serve in.

"I’m just so glad I got to work with my [squad] this year. I couldn’t have been so successful without their support.

"They were awesome."
