Commander's Welcome
It is an honor and privilege to welcome you to the 65th annual Student Conference on United States Affairs. There are few things more important in American Political society than the relationship between the military and our civilian leaders. This conference is an excellent opportunity to explore that relationship, and take part in hearty discussion about important issues facing our nation and the world. I hope that my staff and I can provide a professional, comfortable and fun forum for that dialogue. SCUSA has been crafted over many years to provide engaged roundtable discussions, policy-focused paper development, diverse speakers and social interaction. This allows delegates from colleges across the nation to communicate intellectually, all the while forming important bonds that will last for many years to come.
SCUSA is known most for its roundtable discussions. Each roundtable covers a particular area in United States current affairs, and is overseen by experts in that area called “Co-Chairs.” This allows for a union of students and seniors, helping foster an educated approach to problem solving. Diversity is crucial to the success of the roundtable discussion, as differing perspectives and experiences allow for unique solutions to come to the surface. SCUSA also puts on several social functions for the delegates, which allow for the bonds between the different delegates to grow and broaden beyond the academic scope of the conference. The end goal of table discussions are the jointly created policy papers and the famous skits to relay the messages. The aim, though, is that connections made here at SCUSA will last a lifetime, and that they may helping solve real world issues as we all move on to work in the military, government, business and other venues.
Safety and comfort are our two major concerns as the SCUSA staff. The United States Military Academy has many time honored traditions, and our lifestyle is certainly unique. We ask that you, as a guest at our institution, abide by the rules and regulations laid out for you. Specifically, wearing the badges we provide, abiding by curfew, and responsible alcohol use will allow everyone to have an enjoyable experience.
I hope that SCUSA 65 is a memorable experience for us all, and one which allows us to view our world from a broadened perspective.
