COL Dan McCarthy graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1990 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Aviation Branch. Upon completion of the Aviation Officer Basic Course and Flight School at Fort Rucker, Alabama, he was assigned as a UH-60 Blackhawk assault helicopter platoon leader in the 1st Armored Division in Hanau, Germany. He later deployed his platoon to Mogadishu, Somalia as part of Task Force 5-158 Aviation in support of Operation Restore Hope. He was then assigned as the Battalion Personnel Officer for the 2nd Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, an AH-64 Apache attack helicopter battalion.
Upon his return from Germany, COL McCarthy completed the Aviation Officer Advanced Course and was reassigned to the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina where he initially served as the Assistant Operations Officer of the 2nd Battalion, 82nd Aviation Brigade. COL McCarthy assumed command of the Headquarters Company of the 82nd Aviation Brigade in December, 1995. Following command, COL McCarthy served as the Brigade Personnel Officer for the 82nd Aviation Brigade.
Following graduate school at the University of Virginia, COL McCarthy was assigned as an instructor and later as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Systems Engineering at the United States Military Academy, where he served from 1999 to 2003. In addition to teaching, he served as the Personnel Officer for the Department of Systems Engineering, as an Officer Representative and later as an assistant Coach for the Army Sprint Football team.
COL McCarthy attended the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 2003 until 2006 when he returned to USMA and rejoined the Department of Systems Engineering as an Academy Professor. In addition to teaching a number of different courses, COL McCarthy served as the Program Director of the Systems Engineering Program from 2008 until 2012 and currently serves as the Director of the Operations Research Center. He is also the Head Officer Representative for the Army Sprint Football team and the Officer in Charge of the Catholic Cadet Catechist Club.
COL McCarthy deployed to Afghanistan in May 2009 with the 82nd Airborne Division serving as the Chief of Assessments. He later deployed to Iraq in December 2009 where he served as the Chief of Strategic Assessments for US Forces Iraq.
COL McCarthy graduated from the United States Military Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Leadership. He also holds a Master of Engineering degree in Systems Engineering from the University of Virginia and a PhD in Management Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
COL McCarthy and his wife Patty are the proud parents of four boys: Matthew (21), Shane (18), Michael (15), and Jack (11).
