Dr. John Z. Smith is an Assistant Professor of Economics and Researcher in the Office of Economic and Manpower Analysis.  Dr. Smith earned a B.S. in Economics from the University of Iowa in 1988 and a Ph.D. in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1993.  Previously, Dr. Smith was an Assistant Professor at Vassar College and an Assistant Professor, Department Head and Clinical Associate Professor at New York University’s McGhee Liberal Arts Division.  At New York University, he received Distinguished Service and Teaching Awards.  His primary areas of research are labor economics, human capital, and the returns to education.
