The Department of Army owns the trademarks associated with the United States Military Academy, and has authorized the Military Academy to administer the trademark program. The marks are controlled by the Office of the Directorate of Intercollegiate Athletics and the Association of Graduates. The Collegiate Licensing Company of Atlanta, GA oversees the use of the trademarks on products and grants licenses for their use. Collegiate Licensing Company also polices and enforces the marks and is a vital partner with the Department of Army in ensuring West Point's names, symbols, and colors are used in a manner consistent with its reputation as a builder of leaders of character prepared for service to the Nation as an Army officer.

To use any USMA-related trademark on any item or in connection with any service, a potential vendor must first obtain a license, or permission, to use the trademark from CLC. Licenses generate royalties, which are paid into the general funds of both ODIA and AOG to directly support the Corps of Cadets. West Point's Licensing Director works with CLC to ensure only the highest-quality goods and services carry the USMA-related trademarks and is the final approval authority. Failure to obtain a license for the use of a trademarked word, phrase, or symbol can result in legal action against a vendor to cease the illegal use.

The USMA Licensing Director also has the authority to grant permission for use of the trademarks for one-time, non-commercial, private purposes, such as wedding invitations.

Commercial Uses: If you intend to sell an item on which you plan to place a USMA-related trademark (including but not limited to symbols, logos, verbiage, colors, numbers, and letters), you must enter into a licensing agreement and pay royalties on all sales of your item(s). The CLC grants these licenses after approval by the USMA Licensing Director. To become a licensee, contact CLC at www.CLC.com and use the drop-down menus to obtain information and an application.

Non-Commercial Uses: If you intend to use a USMA-related trademark (including but not limited to symbols, logos, verbiage, colors, numbers, and letters) on a strictly personal item that will not be used in a business or commercial manner, you may not need a license, but you will need permission to do so. These permissions are usually granted for a one-time use only and will usually not be approved for any type of continuing use. To obtain permission for use of the trademarks in a non-commercial manner, please contact Mr. Jim Flowers, the USMA Licensing Director, at 845-938-4443 for more information.

On-Post Use: USMA activities, departments, and DCA-sanctioned clubs may use the trademarks for business purposes such as letterhead, business cards, publications, and web sites. Non-USMA organizations, including but not limited to national or other organizations under which DCA-sanctioned clubs may be organized, or trade or professional associations with which departments may be associated, may not use the trademarks without a license. The trademarks must be used uniformly according to the layouts found on the logo sheets at the USMA Trademarks page. No trademark may be altered without the express consent of the Licensing Director. Questions or use approvals should be directed to Mr. Jim Flowers, USMA Licensing Director, at 845-938-4443.

Only an officially licensed vendor is approved to produce emblematic merchandise bearing USMA-related trademarks. Merchandise produced without written authorization may infringe upon USMA's trademarks and subject the user to disciplinary action, in addition to enforcement through all available legal remedies, including seizure of the merchandise.

West Point Parents' Clubs/West Point Societies: All uses of the trademarks on items produced or obtained/purchased to further the business and/or interests of the various Parents' Clubs and West Point Societies must be approved by the Licensing Director. Contact between the Parents' Clubs/West Point Societies and the USMA is generally accomplished through the Public Affairs Office which will refer the specific matter to the Licensing Director for approval. The Parents' Clubs/West Point Societies are, or course, able to contact the Licensing Director directly with questions and/or to obtain permission to use the marks.

Only an officially licensed vendor is approved to produce emblematic merchandise bearing USMA-related trademarks. Merchandise produced without written authorization may infringe upon USMA's trademarks and subject the user to adverse action, in addition to enforcement through all available legal remedies, including seizure of the merchandise.

Questions or use approvals should be directed to Mr. Jim Flowers, USMA Licensing Director, at 845-938-4443.

How to Tell if a Product is Officially Licensed: The "Officially Licensed Collegiate Products" label should appear on all approved and licensed merchandise. This label is for approved and authorized use only and signifies that the merchandise on which it is attached has been approved for sale by the CLC and its client universities. The unauthorized reproduction, distribution, or use of this holographic label is prohibited.

With this label, alumni, parents, fans, and supporters know they are buying a product of quality and authenticity that represents the good will of the USMA. The label is your assurance that merchandise has been approved by the USMA and that royalties from your purchase will benefit the USMA.
Any merchandise not bearing these labels for institutions represented by the CLC, but using the trademarks of that institution, may represent an infringement of trademark laws, punishable by law.

Whether you are an individual or organization, commercial or non-commercial, if you have any questions regarding whether your proposed use of USMA-related trademarks is commercial or non-commerical, or whether your particular use requires a license at all, please contact Mr. Jim Flowers, the USMA Licensing Director at 845-938-4443.
