Orienteering Team
LTC Hendricks, Michael
GENE (845)938-2472
The Orienteering team helps to train cadets to move quickly through all kinds
of terrain while finding points on a map using only a compass, pace count, and
mental prowess. Orienteering uses special maps designed specifically for the
sport which show detailed terrain, man-made features, and numerous water features.
The team competes in meets in places ranging from Canada, the Hudson Valley,
Georgia, the Midwest, and California. Although Orienteering is usually an individual
sport, the team competes each year in the Intercollegiate Championships against
teams from Navy, Harvard, and New Hampshire to name a few. The team hosts Extreme
Orienteering in the fall, and a regular meet in the spring which draws upwards
of 400 participants. The team also helps to train boy scouts in land navigation
and even sets up courses and instruction for reserve units doing weekend exercises.
