ABOUT

GENERAL.  Army Sailing is a United States Military Academy at West Point club sport. It consists of male and female cadets of all classes. Tryouts are typically held prior to the Fall season. The Army Sailing Team teaches cadets competitive sailing and provides them with a foundation for a lifetime sport. Through a structured and vigorous training program, cadets develop the initiative, strategy, teamwork, and leadership skills necessary to excel as officers in the United States Army.

VISION. Our vision is to train competitive sailors and future Army officers by immersing cadets in an environment in which they are forced to think critically, quickly, and tactically. The Army sailor will be competitive while racing and demonstrate sportsmanship, integrity, and personal pride. Army Sailing will require cadets to hone those skills necessary to make confident and informed decisions as future officers in the United States Army.

PHYSICAL NEEDS. Physical fitness is essential to racing. Skills needed are: Agility, Coordination, Endurance, and Strength.

MENTAL AWARENESS. To be a good sailor, one must have a strong knowledge of wind speed, direction, shadows, and variability. One must also understand currents, relative positions, and course routes.

RACING. We compete with some of the best varsity and club programs in the country including Navy, Cornell, and Georgetown. Racing demands intensity, timing, strategy, discipline, and practice. Situational awareness, strategic/tactical thinking, risk management, and safety are key to a successful race.
