After teaching Physical Education and coaching Women’s Swimming at Penn State, Wellesley College and the University of Idaho, Sue arrived at West Point in 1977, one year after Women first entered the Academy. She was the first Varsity Women’s Swim Coach at the Academy, and from 1977 – ‘84 she coached the Army Women Swimmers to a total of 10 Individual All-American honors, as well as one New York State Team Championship and two Eastern Collegiate Team Championships.

From 1983 through 1991, Sue conducted the Off-Season Aerobics/Exercise to Music Conditioning Programs for 17 Corps Squad teams at West Point, to include the Football, Lacrosse and Baseball teams, to name a few. She is currently the Faculty Facilitator for the Football Team’s FCA Bible Study Huddle.

In addition to her scholarly pursuits, in 2000 Sue was a co-recipient of the US Military Academy’s Apgar Award for Excellence in Teaching. Since 2000, Dr. Tendy has been involved in the Academy’s Outcomes Assessment Program, culminating with her involvement in the 2009 Middle States Accreditation Review as Co-Chair, with COL Steve Ressler, of the Outcomes Assessment Working Group.

In 2006 Dr. Tendy was awarded The USMA Medallion of Distinguished Accomplishment. This recognition is the first and only one of its kind ever awarded by Women Graduates of the United States Military Academy. It acknowledged Dr. Tendy as “a major force in the mentoring and development of Women at West Point throughout the 30 year history of women at the Academy”.
