​LTC Russell Nowels graduated from USMA in 2000 where he was commissioned into the Armor Branch.  As an Armor officer LTC Nowels served in several leadership and staff positions to include tank platoon leader, troop executive officer, regimental adjutant, and assistant operations officer while assigned to the 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment where he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003 and 2005.  Following his time in the 3d ACR, LTC Nowels commanded a cavalry troop in 2nd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division.  LTC Nowels next served as a primary instructor of military movement, combatives, and unit fitness development in the Department of Physical Education at West Point, NY from 2009-2011 where he also supervised the Competitive Club Athletics Program.  Most recently, LTC Nowels completed a joint assignment as the Chief of Training and Exercises at the Joint Navigation Warfare Center, Kirtland Air Force Base, NM.  He currently serves as the Executive Officer for the Department of Physical Education.  

LTC Nowels' professional military education includes the Armor Officer Basic Course, Armor Captains Career Course, Intermediate-Level Education, Space Operations Officer Qualification Course and Joint Professional Military Education Phase II. 
LTC Nowels holds a master’s of science degree from Indiana University in Kinesiology.  He is a NSCA Tactical Strength and Conditioning Facilitator as well as a certified Army Master Fitness Trainer, Modern Army Combatives Level II Instructor, USA Track and Field Level I, and a NAIA Champions of Character Coach.
