An internationally recognized educator and aquatics expert, John McVan’s 35 year professional pathway has been both unique and distinguished.
In 1983, he accepted his first professional appointment at Muhlenberg College (PA), where he served as an Assistant Professor, Director of Aquatics, and Head Coach of both Men's & Woman's Cross Country/Track & Field Programs. In 1990, he accepted the position of Director of Athletics/Physical Education at Waldron Mercy Academy (PA), where his primary duties centered on both curricular development as well as athletic program coordination/administration. In 1993, he accepted a faculty position within the Department of Health & Human Performance at Iowa State University, where he assumed oversight of the Physical Activity Program, Directorship of the department's Graduate Assistant division, and coordination of the Aquatics instructional program.
In 2001, Mr. McVan accepted an Assistant Professor appointment within the Department of Physical Education at the United States Military Academy, with primary responsibilities centered on aquatics instruction. In addition to curricular development and faculty supervision, he designed the Combat Water Survival Swim Laboratory, which is a state-of-the art operational training/testing venue currently utilized within the Corp of Cadets for curricular completion requirements.
An honored recipient of The Mike Krzyzewski Teaching Character through Sport Award, BG GEN James L. Anderson Achievement Award, and AAHPERD Most Outstanding Aquatic Educator Award; John has authored papers/presentations in numerous professional venues throughout the world, most notably Australia, the Netherlands, and Portugal; and also teaches within the DPE Lifetime Sports Program (Lifeguarding, Emergency Water Safety, and Snowboarding).
