Robert McDonald, who joined the West Point faculty in 1998, is Professor of History.  Born and raised in Connecticut, he is a graduate of the University of Virginia, Oxford University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned his Ph.D.  A specialist in the American Revolution and the early American republic, his publications include several journal articles and scholarly essays. He is also the author of Confounding Father: Thomas Jefferson's Image in His Own Time and editor of Thomas Jefferson's Military Academy: Founding West Point; Light and Liberty: Thomas Jefferson and the Power of Knowledge; and Sons of the Father: George Washington and his Protégés. He is currently completing another edited volume, which will be titled Thomas Jefferson's Lives: Biographers and the Battle for History.
